Grammar:
I) The words “crem”, “gri”, “maro” are adjectives. In the Romanian language the adjectives are variable and invariable. “Crem”, “gri”, “maro” are invariable adjectives. This means they don’t change their form in accordance with the gender, the number and the case. There are a few invariable adjectives in the Romanian language. Some are colour names, like the adjectives above.
II) You already noticed I used possessive pronouns in the sentences you read. The possessive pronouns are always accompanied by the possessive article. To indicate that the possessor (or the possessors) possesses one thing we use the following possessive articles:
al- if the thing possessed is masculine or neuter
a- if the thing possessed is feminine
These are the forms of the possessive pronouns when there is one possessor and one thing possessed:
1) First person:
al meu- if the thing possessed is masculine or neuter
a mea- if the thing possessed is feminine
2) Second person:
al tău- if the thing possessed is masculine or neuter
a ta- if the thing possessed is feminine
3) Third person:
al său- if the thing possessed is masculine or neuter
a sa- if the thing possessed is feminine
Besides the forms “său”, “sa” we use the forms “lui”, if the possessor is masculine and “ei”, if the possessor is feminine. These forms are useful when we can’t decide from the context if the possessor is masculine or feminine.
Listen and read:
Paltonul vernil este al lui.=The lime green coat is his.
Creionul vernil este al ei.=The lime green pencil is hers.
Masa maro este a lui.=The brown table is his.
Fusta gri este a ei.=The grey skirt is hers.
III) The nominative and accusative neuter forms of the definite article are:
singular: -l, -le
plural: -le
For the neuter nouns ending in consonant the singular definite article is –l. It is attached with the help of the vowel u.
